Ah, the holidays. Without apology, I'll be taking a much needed 10-day break from the stresses of daily life. How does this affect you? Well, while my wife and I are off visiting family and having a jolly time, I won't be receiving email. I'll attempt to catch up, when we return. Until then, take care of yourselves.
<announcement class="public service"> If you use the Tantek Çelik box model hack to work around IE5/Win's incorrect box model, you should always add appropriately placed "be nice to Opera 5" rules. Not only are such rules nice to user agents like Opera 5, they're necessary for proper behavior in IE5/Win. Without "be nice to Opera 5" rules, some browsers (particularly IE5/Win) will ignore the rule immediately following the hacked rule. Oh, I see this much too often. </announcement>
If you frequently visit CSS-heavy websites with the Windows version of Internet Explorer, you've seen it: that annoying momentary flash of unstyled content. Flash of Unstyled Content, a brand new BlueRobot article, describes a couple of solutions to this display problem. Learn all about it. Impress your friends.
I've given this page a much needed code massage, adding a stylesheet for better printing and a "friendly fonts" alternate stylesheet for browsers that understand such things. If no major problems are encountered, I'll apply the changes to the older log pages. The observant IE5+/Win users among you will notice that the momentary flash of unstyled content phenomenon is a thing of the past. But fear not, if you really miss seeing BlueRobot unstyled, turn ?css=off" title="Switch off the CSS for this page.">off the CSS and party like it's 1995.
Just for kicks, view this site with the CSS turned <% If Request.QueryString ("css") <> "off" Then %> ?css=off" title="Switch off the CSS for this page.">off. <% Else %> " title="Switch on the CSS for this page.">on. <% End If %>
Great redesigns at geraldstanley.com and bareSquare.
At least someone cares about my pet CSS validator bug.
Properties for media the property doesn't apply to marks style sheet as invalid, e.g. @media screen { voice-family: foo } The CSS Level 2 recommendation doesn't say such style sheets are invalid. The error should be turned into a warning. (Reported by Rob Chandanais)
They Might Be Giants, Brooklyn's brilliant geek rock band, is touring in support of its latest masterpiece, Mink Car. Tonight, TMBG will play on the University of Iowa campus. And I'll be there, yelling and jumping and singing along.
You haven't heard from me in over two weeks. Somehow, in the wake of the 11 September attacks, the usual web design noise seems insignificant. Does anyone really care about a possible bug in the W3C CSS validator? Today, I don't. But I must begin to care again. I must escape escapism.
